How to stop procrastination?

What procrastination is?

Procrastination is the art of postponing tasks that you don’t want to do until the next day! Let’s be honest, who among us never procrastinates? I was the first to always have this bad habit of doing the easiest tasks or things I « didn’t want to do » at the end. And to push back the less glamorous to the next day, even the next week, and so on.

Why do we procrastinate?

There are plenty of reasons that lead us to postpone our tasks. The stress of failing, facing difficulty, or even succeeding! These result in a lack of self-confidence. But also a lack of motivation and pleasure experienced in what we do. For example, remember that math course you hated when you were younger, coincidentally it was homework that you constantly put off on weekends at home.

But procrastination can just be lazy, so you’re going to rather do nothing than achieve what you need to do.

The consequences of procrastination

Stress is the first direct consequence of procrastination. It’s a vicious circle. You put off this stressful task, only to stress out not to do it immediately. Not doing it adds a weight, a load on your brain and then you stress more and more.

By feeling pressed for time because we didn’t take action when we needed to, stress arises and it damages our mental health, and even physical health when it’s repeated too much.

Then, all of this also leads to a decrease in our personal confidence. By dint of not carrying out our projects or carrying out our missions late, we end up doubting our abilities. It can also have repercussions on our self-esteem. As we have seen, having a good self-esteem is quite simply essential to our well-being.

How to stop procrastinating?

Don’t worry, there are lots of solutions to stop procrastinating! Now that I have adapted these tools in my daily life, not only do I feel better but I see the results in my work. Here are a few :

1: Make a list of things that are already done, currently done or not yet

2: Set achievable goals

3: Start by the hardest

4: Focus and avoid the distractions

5: Make so reasonable breaks

6: Congratulate and reward yourself

But above all for me it is generally a question of making a good routine to be respected as much as possible, and taking action!

Remember, it is better to take small steps every day than nothing at all. And that there is nothing better than a good routine to transform these « tasks » into habits!

Taking action and no longer procrastinating will take a real mental load off you and help you stop stressing, gain self-confidence, self-esteem, and therefore mental well-being.
