How can you develop yourself and evolve if you don’t already know yourself? The first step is to get to really know you. This person that you are, with its qualities and faults, its strengths and weaknesses. The personality, emotions, values, opinions, aspirations and ambitions. All those things that make you that person you can be proud of.
And do you know what? Personal development therefore begins with learning … to know yourself.
How to learn to know yourself?
START to focus on you
To know yourself, you must already refocus on your inner self. Being alone in front of yourself and your feelings, your emotions, will be the first step towards real self-knowledge. But then how to find yourself? There are several ways that I myself have been able to experience. First of all: the solo trip.
Indeed, going alone, even if it’s not at the end of the world, is a great way to get to know yourself. This choice of travel allows you to find freedom. To get out of your comfort zone, to be proud of yourself, to gain confidence, to gain independence and autonomy. It allows you to know your strengths and weaknesses, to better understand your reactions and to better manage stress.
It’s after a solo trip, with hindsight, that you’ll know yourself better. Because it is when you are alone that you really get to know yourself.
However, it’s not just the solo trip that allows us to get to know ourselves better. There are loads of other exercises you can apply on this path to know yourself. Do things on your own every day that you usually do with someone else. Very simple activities. Go for shopping alone, have a coffee alone, go for a run alone. Try this hike that you have never dared to do or book a solo city trip in Europe!
Just try to do little things on your own. It’s by coming face to face with yourself that you get to really know you. In addition to earn independence, autonomy and self-confidence.
The importance to know who you are
How important is it to know yourself then? Well, since you don’t drive a car without an engine, you can’t love other without loving yourself, and therefore loving yourself without knowing yourself.
Personal fulfillment can’t exist if you don’t love yourself for who you are. And you can’t really love yourself without knowing you. Know your qualities and defaults, your strengths and weaknesses, and assume them. Know your personality, your character, your ambitions, motivations, dreams and aspirations. It’s knowing what you like in life and what you don’t like. Be aware of your strengths, know your values. Knowing yourself also allows you to find your way, your personal quest, and to succeed in realizing your dreams and building your projects!
Getting to know yourself first is the best way to learn to love yourself.
This part will be further developed in the first book I am writing and will soon publish on personal development. 😉
